Skype for Families

I have always heard of skype, and even talked to my wife about using it with her parents, who live in upstate New York. But it was always a conversation that never went anywhere.

After having tried Skype, and purchasing a web cam for this class, I am convinced there is no better way to keep in touch. It would allow family and friends to not only speak with us, but to see our kids, and see them grow.

I am so enamored with Skype, that I am trying to convince a friend of mine, in the middle of a divorce, that this would be a great way to see his kids every night. It would allow him to be involved in their bedtime rituals, and even allow him to read his kids stories, to help them sleep, all at no cost.

I am going to make it my mission, despite my in-laws possible fear, to have this set up at their house, over the Christmas holiday.

It is truly an amazing tool, and I am thankful that it has been brought to my attention.

  1. Skype kind of makes me think of the Jetsons. I remember as a kid watching that cartoon thinking, "Wow, we're gonna be able to SEE the people who call us?" At the time, that seemed like technology in the far distant future (like floating cars). Now it's here. I'm wondering if it will actually become mainstream technology and I wonder if it's always a good thing to be able to see the people we're talking to...Might talking to telemarketer via skype give rise to communication rage? What would the ramifications be?

  2. It is a great idea of giving a web cam to somebody as a Christmas present. I can already think of couple of people I could give it to.
I like Skype because it allows me to have more frequent contact between colleagues, friends and family all over the world. It will also permit me to have connections with those not likely to be in touch through the phone.
